Thanksgiving Blessing – It’s Complicated

Thanksgiving Blessing – It’s Complicated

I wish you a peaceful Thanksgiving holiday. Whether you are alone or with a big group. Having a Friendsgiving or a traditional family gathering. If this holiday brings you joy and especially if it is painful. I offer you my wishes for peace, safety, health, and enough of everything you need now and always.

This is one blessing we use at our Thanksgiving meal:

We are lucky to have this time to be together. This year and over many past years, we have shared abundant meals, celebrated the good fortune of being together with family and friends, and had safe, warm, and loving spaces to share.

Let’s offer our thanks to all the people who contributed to this meal and to our meals every day, to the people who plant, harvest, pack, and transport our food. May everyone be safe and share the abundance of what they helped provide.

As we feel the gratitude for all these things, this meal, this time, and these people in particular, let’s also note that this holiday of Thanksgiving has a complicated history (as many holidays and histories do). For many Native people, Thanksgiving is a time of mourning. It is a reminder of a period of great violence and loss, with repercussions that continue to be felt in indigenous communities today.

As we enjoy our good fortune and our many blessings, let us hold both those truths in our hearts.
