Springing to Life: Wildlife Happenings in Durham

Black snake leaving her elegant, sinuous mark in the pollen on the path

Salamander under the wet leaves by the pond

Pair of frogs leaping in, splashing

Snails who shouldn’t be there but are such an exquisite blue-violet

Red cardinals drinking from the emerald mossy waterfall

Bluebirds swooping down to eat mild-mannered ground bees

Yellow butterflies impossibly high in the treetops

Raccoon sleeping camouflaged in the hollow of a tulip poplar

Tiny tender leaves budding on massive old oaks

Rabbit startling when I catch her watching me through the window

Wisteria smelling like grape candy and draping joy over our little gazebo (and deadly beauty over so much else)

Chickadee disappearing into her nest inside an improbably skinny tree by the kitchen window

Fat carpenter bee boldly staring me down

Crow couple talking loudly and strutting

This season keeps me hopeful with

Mama squirrel’s staying power and

The poignant sweetness in the air

  1. Mara,
Thank you for capturing these moments of transcendent beauty for us, they are truly wonderful. Spring is such a miracle, and nature is the epitome of rebirth and transformation. For a moment, I was there in your garden, experiencing the joy.

    1. Thank you, Melissa! I sometimes feel a little guilty playing favorites with the seasons, but I can’t help myself with spring. Would love to see you here!
