Mara Bishop and Dr. Larry Burk: Shamanic and Intuitive Practices for Health and Guidance

February 7, 2014 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm EST

This shared Rhine Center Friday talk will offer information about two popular and effective healing modalities, Shamanism and Dream Interpretation.

For thousands of years shamans have helped their communities as healers and by interpreting information. We will discuss some of the characteristics of classic shamanic practices as well as how those practices are being used today, for individuals, with groups and in research. Practitioners of shamanism are able to navigate typically unseen worlds by accessing non-ordinary states of consciousness to connect with sources of wisdom and healing. Shamans use a variety of methods to induce these altered state of consciousness. Drumming is a time-honored means of brainwave entrainment used by many cultures around the world to facilitate shamanic journeying. We will discuss and experience ways shamanic practices can help restore and maintain health.

Dreaming is also highly valued by indigenous people as a means of healing and guidance. Dreams often reveal a great deal of information about our health and affairs that may be unknown on a conscious level. Warning dreams of breast cancer patients are the subject of a current research project with Institutional Review Board approval through the Rhine Research Center. The study will continue to enroll patients who had dreams about their breast cancers that led to their diagnosis until 2/10/14.
